Accelerated Reader, including the new STAR Application, is a computerized reading program available to students school wide. This program is a wonderful enhancement to the reading curriculum. It inspires students of all ages to read beyond what is required of them in their reading and literature classes. Both the elementary and high school libraries have computer stations with access to Accelerated Reader tests. All books under the umbrella of the program have computerized quizzes designed to determine the student's understanding of the book. Teachers will work with their students to set individual reading goals. The reading teachers and the elementary librarian will record and recognize student effort and progress in the program.
Grades 1-6
Accelerated Reader books are identified in the library with blue tags and are assigned points ranging from .5 to 60+. Points are awarded to the student based on the difficulty, and length of the book selected and the percentage of questions answered correctly.
Grades 7-12
Students in grades 7-12 are encouraged, but not required, to participate in the AR program. Awards are given by the Jr./Sr. high librarians each semester to the students with the most AR points.
Summer Reading
Students in grades 4 through 6 are given Summer Reading lists at the end of each school year. New students (enrolled during the summer) are given the list when they enroll. These books must be read before school starts in August. During the first week of school, students will be completing projects in their reading classes demonstrating their comprehension of the books.
AR Eligible Books
The Runnels Elementary Library has access to over 150,000 AR quizzes. For a full listing of books that have coordinating tests, follow the link below:
