Elementary
Runnels offers an after-school sports program in several seasonal sports. While the program is organized and supervised by a faculty member serving as Elementary Athletic Director, the coaching staff consists of volunteer parent coaches.
Our school strives for three major objectives:
1. To help young people develop (a) physically, by learning sports skills, improving physical conditioning, developing good health habits, and avoiding injuries; (b) psychologically, by learning to control their emotions and to develop feelings of self-worth; and (c) socially, by learning how to cooperate in a competitive context and by learning appropriate standards of behavior (sportsmanship). 2. To help them have fun in practices and games. 3. To have winning teams.
Jr High Sports
Runnels offers participation in many after-school junior high sports throughout the year. The programs are helmed by a Junior High Athletic Director. Coaches are carefully selected by the director to be excellent role models for the students and to be able to provide instruction in the fundamentals of their sports at all skill levels.
In the junior high program, a great attempt is made to join leagues and form small teams that maximize equity at competitive levels. The program has the multiple goals of developing all students’ skill levels, recognizing the role of competition in athletics, allowing all students to achieve a measure of success, and of sustaining the tradition of athletic excellence at Runnels.
